Is NCLEX Going Online in 2027? What NCSBN Has Confirmed

No 2027 launch date has been confirmed. As of September 4, 2026, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has not announced that NCLEX Online will launch in 2027. NCSBN is developing a remotely proctored option, but candidates currently must take the NCLEX at an approved Pearson Professional Center. When the online option eventually launches, NCSBN says test centers will remain available.

The confirmed 2027 change is separate: NCLEX registration fees increase on February 1, 2027. That date is not an NCLEX Online launch date. If you are planning a 2027 exam, prepare for the current test-center process unless NCSBN publishes new candidate instructions.

NCLEX Online 2027: The Official Status at a Glance

The key distinction: NCSBN has confirmed the project and several planned features. It has not confirmed the year in which candidates can begin booking online appointments.

Can You Take the NCLEX Online Right Now?

No. NCSBN's current support guidance states that the NCLEX is not available remotely and is administered only inside its approved Pearson Professional Center network. The NCLEX testing-locations page lists domestic and international test centers.

You can complete parts of the process online today, which is a common source of confusion. Candidates can register with Pearson online and, after receiving an Authorization to Test (ATT), usually schedule an appointment online. Those online account steps still lead to an in-person test-center appointment.

Online Scheduling Is Not Online Testing

Today, you may register and schedule through Pearson online, but you still take the exam at a test center. The future NCLEX Online option is a separate, remotely proctored way to take the same exam.

The current process remains:

1. Apply for licensure or registration to your nursing regulatory body (NRB).
2. Meet that NRB's eligibility requirements and register for the NCLEX with Pearson.
3. Receive your ATT after your NRB makes you eligible.
4. Schedule and take the exam within the validity dates printed on your ATT.

Use the official NCLEX registration process for current instructions. Do not follow a social post that claims a remote appointment is available unless the option also appears in official NCLEX candidate guidance.

Why Are People Saying the NCLEX Will Go Online in 2027?

NCSBN has publicly promoted the idea of taking the NCLEX at home, so the underlying project is real. What is not real is a confirmed 2027 deadline. NCSBN specifically rejected rumors of a 2026 launch and said it would provide substantial advance notice when a date is set. A missed 2026 rumor does not automatically turn 2027 into the official launch year.

This is why responsible guidance should say “a 2027 launch is not confirmed” rather than “the NCLEX will not go online in 2027.” NCSBN could announce a date later, but there is currently no official basis for predicting one.

What Has NCSBN Confirmed About Future NCLEX Online Testing?

The official NCLEX Online FAQs provide more detail than the launch-date rumors suggest. NCSBN has confirmed the intended design of the future service:

• Online testing will be optional. Candidates will be able to choose between NCLEX Online and a test center when scheduling.
• Domestic and international NCLEX candidates will be included. This is the stated future plan, not a service available today; candidates will still need to satisfy their nursing regulator's requirements.
• The exam itself will be the same. NCSBN says question design, length, rules, psychometric quality, legal defensibility, and reliability will not change based on delivery location; the remote security process will differ.
• Accommodations will remain available. The specific accommodation may depend on whether the candidate tests online or at a center.
• Retakers will not be locked into one method. After launch, a candidate will be able to choose online or a test center for a later attempt.
• Technical help will be built into the experience. NCSBN says candidates experiencing technical issues will receive instructions and be able to chat with the exam proctor.

These commitments explain the direction of the project. They are not permission to book, buy equipment, or apply a generic remote-exam rulebook yet.

How Is Future NCLEX Online Security Planned to Work?

NCSBN says the future system will use enhanced technology and live monitoring to protect identity and exam integrity. The official page names ID validation, object detection, and an environmental scan. It also describes a dual-camera setup using a computer camera and a candidate's phone.

NCSBN says candidates will use a free 360 app on a phone together with the computer camera, giving live proctors a wider view of the testing area. A technical check will also be required.

Under the announced plan, the phone is part of the exam-security process. Candidates would not be allowed to use it for unrelated purposes during the exam. The online version would also follow the same NCLEX rules as a test-center exam, with additional checks for the remote environment.

Do not copy the requirements of another remote-proctored test and assume they apply to NCLEX Online. NCSBN says it is building a new system and has not released a complete candidate setup guide.

What NCLEX Online Requirements Are Still Unknown?

NCSBN has not yet published enough information for candidates to set up a test room or decide whether a particular computer and internet connection will qualify. As of the verification date, the following details remain unannounced:

• The launch date or launch year
• The date online appointments will open
• Full operating-system, device, camera, and internet specifications
• Detailed room, desk, break, and environmental-check instructions
• Online appointment availability by country, time zone, or rollout phase
• Any online-specific scheduling, rescheduling, or technical-failure policies
• Whether online delivery will have a separate scheduling charge

NCLEX Online vs. a Test Center: What Will Stay the Same?

NCSBN describes NCLEX Online as another delivery choice, not a new or easier licensure exam. When the option launches, where you test should not change what competence the exam measures.

Will the Online NCLEX Be a Different or Shorter Exam?

NCSBN says the exam itself will not be different. Its question design, length, rules, reliability, and legal defensibility will remain the same regardless of delivery location. The remote check-in, technology, and security experience will differ, so individual candidates may still find one testing environment more comfortable than the other.

Under the current 2026 plans, the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN are variable-length CAT exams with 85 to 150 items and a five-hour limit, including the introductory screen and breaks. Eligible items can use partial-credit scoring. Review the current NCLEX and NGN question formats instead of changing your study plan around an unannounced delivery date.

Should You Wait for NCLEX Online in 2027?

No—not solely because of the online-testing possibility. If your NRB eligibility, ATT window, preparation, and personal timeline support testing, there is no confirmed 2027 launch date that justifies delaying an otherwise appropriate appointment.

Waiting can create practical risks. Your ATT has fixed validity dates set by your NRB, test-center seats may become limited, and missing the window can require a new registration and fee. The registration fee also increases on February 1, 2027, based on the date registration is completed—not the date of the exam.

What Should 2027 NCLEX Candidates Do Now?

A future at-home option may reduce travel and expand scheduling choices, especially for candidates who live far from a test center. But online testing also adds technology, room, monitoring, and contingency considerations. Wait for the complete rules, then choose the environment in which you can test most reliably.
